The
Team

At-Hand Apps founders and team are seasoned computer industry veterans. The teams’ high-level of technical and visionary industry capabilities are grounded in undergraduate and graduate degrees from MIT, Cornell, Boston University, Brandeis, University of Pennsylvania and other academic venues. Industry experience is sourced from combined company involvement with well-known corporate icons such as: HP, EMC, DEC, IDC, and GM where team members previously contributed to and lead many successful projects.

By style, the At-Hand Apps team members are highly collaborative, anticipating a formal co-op form as it exits its early startup phase. We envision embracing an expanding circle of participation for creative product development based on the unique contributions of team members. Team members value making a real difference, an environment that demands curiosity and continuous learning, while having fun. We are committed to creating these opportunities for others.

Founder

Robert Gray: Well-known computer industry analyst and system designer turned social networking entrepreneur

“Some of my best experiences have been engaging in the creative process. Over the past five years I’ve kept a singular vision of how the next big phase of computer technology would impact us: turn the web around and have users exploit it for supporting personal domains of life. At-Hand Apps, in the first instance, is about actualizing that vision and the full potential of mobile devices. In the second instance, it is about my commitment to generating new platforms and opportunities for seasoned industry veterans. Many of our team members are in a post-corporate mode and want to experiment with enterprise-driven models that are truly collaborative not just in name but in practice.”

Life Track: BEE, Cornell; MEE, University of Pennsylvania; DEC, Genrad, Lexidata, Calcomp, IDC.

Mark H. Granoff: Professional Software Engineer and Independent iOS Developer, with deep experience in telco-grade, reliable, and scalable server software serving millions of users

“As a high school sophomore I knew that I wanted to write software for a living, which is what I have done my entire career. Since then my dream had been to write and sell some software. Twenty years ago, the challenge was not so much to write the software, as it was to actually sell it. With the introduction of the iPhone, coupled with the App Store, Apple made my childhood dream achievable. That alone speaks volumes about the empowering nature of the iOS technology, the platform, and what Apple enables developers to do: focus on apps. My own goals around iOS application development center around building simple, useful, and affordable tools that in some way improve or enhance users’ lives. The opportunity with At-Hand Apps to create solutions for users around those core values is tremendous, and I am pleased to be a part of it.”

Life Track: BA/CS, Clark University; MITRE, Digital Eqipment Corporation, Software.com/Openwave Systems, Jingle Networks, founder Hawk iMedia.

Don Stone: Retired computer science professor with a longstanding interest in the graphic presentation of information

“My interest in graphic design has increased since my retirement, and I have enjoyed designing lineage charts in HTML that are inspired in part by illuminated manuscripts. In the late 1970s I quickly became active in the PC world as an early adopter of (and software developer for) Apple II, Mac and IBM personal computers. Designing and implementing mobile apps is an interesting new wrinkle and I’m enjoying the process of learning new technologies and techniques. Philosophically, I’m committed to supplying people with powerful tools that they can combine and adapt as seems appropriate to their lifestyle, work needs and personal preferences.”

Life Track: Bachelor of Engineering, Physics (Cornell University), M.S., Ph.D. (University of Pennsylvania). Computer science professor and department chair at Rowan University.

Todd Trimble: Professional software application architect, consultant/entrepreneur, and most recently holistic [computer assisted] energetic medicine practitioner

“It excites me to participate in the design and implementation of a suite of applications using the Apple iPhone as a platform that clearly has achieved both design-vision leadership and raw numbers of applications to such a broad base of users. I am interested in how iPhone and iPad impact the future of user interface design and service architectures vis-à-vis cloud computing by making the handset have a seamless interaction with various “live” data feeds and sources of content. I’ve designed, implemented, and deployed distributed systems for over 20 years, starting out in real-time automation in manufacturing, then open distributed desktop servers for DEC and Open Software Foundation, and finally with a number of departmental and enterprise Client/Server and Internet based transactional applications on Windows-NT and Java/Unix. I cut my teeth on Java/J2EE and XML Web Services at Bowstreet (bought by IBM), then became a WebLogic Consultant for Anthem BC/BS, then Lead SOA Architect at General Motors headquarters. I’ve helped many companies achieve the vision of mature, managed, and secure services while at SOA Software.”

Life Track: BSEE and BSCE from University of Michigan, MS Computer Science portions from University of Michigan and Oakland University. GM, Kodak, DEC. Certified Java/J2EE developer and Java Web Components Architect.

Jim Burrows: Software and network architect, usability engineer, operations manager, philosopher, historian, activist and thaumaturgical engineer

“Since I first got on the 'net back in 1974, I've done pure and applied research, advance and product development and project leading in software, networks, usability, security, operations, telecommunications, and the web, never really the same thing twice. The only criteria I've consistently applied to job selection have been a challenging problem and a good team to solve it with. Recently I've realized that an unarticulated third criterion is that I want my work to improve somebody's life, whether it makes them happier, safer, better informed or more efficient. I'm inordinately pleased, for instance, to have done the human factors analysis that resulted in the inverted-T arrangement of the arrow keys used on keyboards for the last 25 years. It may not be a big thing, but how many people did my work affect?”

Life Track: Hiram College, Digital Equipment Corp., World Benders, Gemstar TV Guide, Eldacur Technologies.

Janet Egan: Darn Good Tech Writer, UNIX documentation pioneer, nerd-to-human and human-to-nerd translator

“I've been fascinated by both technology and writing since I was 8 years old. I've been at 'the intersection of science and art' since I got my first typewriter and my first camera in second grade. From writing FORTRAN programs that graphed data about the aurora borealis to developing compilers and run time systems in assembly language at Digital to documenting real time UNIX, data acquisition, telecommunications networking, switches, and leading edge VoIP test equipment, I've been all about making the newest technology accessible to ordinary humans in plain language. I'm fascinated with how mobile applications are changing all aspects of life and thrilled to be part of that change. As a life-long Massachusetts resident, I'm also very happy to be making the wonders of New England available in the palm of your hand.”

Life Track: BS Math, Regis College; Digital Equipment Corporation, MASSCOMP, Boston Technology, Paceline Systems, Empirix, founder Janet Egan Technical Writing.

Karl Puder: Professional software development engineer

“I have been making software for three decades, for a variety of platforms, from squeezing a LISP interpreter into an HP programmable pocket calculator, to natural language processing tools, to systems software for UNIX and VMS minicomputers. My main drive has always been to cover all the cases, to be thorough. Expediency may be needed at times to cover a specific situation, but then I want to go back and generalize the solution.”

Life Track: BS Math from SUNY Fredonia, MS Computer Science from Syracuse University, Burroughs, DEC, Summa Four, DEC, Compaq, HP, SilkRoad Technologies.
